FAQ

IS THIS A SCHOLARSHIP PROGRAM?

MKE Fellows is not a scholarship program, but an immersive 4+ year program that helps African American college men find their career path through mentors, professional skills workshops, summer internships, and an occasional scholarship based on GPA and program participation. Also in the case of unforeseen emergency with tuition, we have a contingency fund set aside for these rare and special cases to keep our students in school and on track.

DO FELLOWS HAVE TO LIVE IN MILWAUKEE?

MKE Fellows is not exclusively for students born and raised in Milwaukee. Though the majority of our participants are from the Milwaukee area, we are continuing to expand our networks all across Wisconsin. Keep in mind that most of our exclusive programming takes place in Milwaukee, so there is a larger benefit to being local.

DO FELLOWS HAVE TO ATTEND SCHOOL IN MILWAUKEE?

Not at all. We welcome our Fellows to explore the best higher education options available to them. Most of our programming happens in the summertime in Milwaukee, and so as long as Fellows are in the area during that time, they are able to benefit most from the program. We do have MKE Fellow cohorts at select schools year-round, so consult with MKE Fellows staff if you wish to gain more information about those.

WHEN ARE APPLICATIONS DUE?

We accept applications year-round, however, our interview season happens in September/October of the year before programming. For example, if you wish to be in the program in the year 2020, you must apply before September 2019.

WHAT IS THE TIME COMMITMENT?

MKE Fellows is intentionally full of accelerated and purposeful programming to help our students make the most of their time. During the months of June, July, and part of August, there are anywhere between 2-10 mandatory events we request our participants to be present at. There are of course exceptions, but realize that these commitments are for the bettering of the students' careers and social networking. Over the course of the year, there are select events that are strongly encouraged or have limited seats that Fellows are welcome to attend, but will not count against them. See the Students page for more details.

CAN HIGH SCHOOLERS APPLY?

Definitely. MKE Fellows welcomes high school juniors and seniors to apply. Once accepted they will be on a waitlist until confirmation of college/university acceptance and attendance. Because this is a college-aged program, high school applicants will not be allowed to every event but will be invited to select opportunities every so often.

DOES THIS COST ANYTHING?

No, being a MKE Fellow does not require any out-of-pocket fees, dues, or costs, in return we only ask for 110% effort and participation in the program. MKE Fellows is supported through in-kind donors, grants, employers, and beyond to make sure the quality of the program does not decrease as more and more Fellows are added to the talent pool.
